Home renovation can do that to you. About two weeks before Susan's first husband was to move out (and we'd move in), to what was their marital home, the ex took the kids to the spend the weekend at the coast. Susan and I were going to paint several of the rooms.
For whatever reason, Susan being especially difficult and demanding, I was already upstairs, laying out drop cloths, when I heard a loud crash. Susan had tripped on the top step of the stair, and dropped a full can of freshly stirred white sealer. The can of paint bounced down a few steps, hitting the landing at the first turn of the stairs. The lid popped off, and a gallon of white paint splooshed all over the dark green pile carpet.
Susan was horrified, suddenly insisting that because of this paint accident before we were to take possession of the house, her ex husband would back out of the sale. Instead of yelling (or trying to explain why spilled paint was not a material breach of the housing contract), I just started scrubbing the paint out of the carpet.
We spent an entire half day, just cleaning a small, 3 foot by four foot carpet (lucky the paint, while a sealing, was still latex). But out relationship survived.
Several years later, we finished the basement. I was still in school, working part time & doing the domestic thing. Susan would come home from work, FURIOUS that the house was so dusty. For some reason, my explanation that when contractors are cutting two four foot square holes for windows in your foundation, a house is going to get "dusty" was to no avail.
Things were said of the type that could not be taken back.....
But our relationship survived, and we went on to live together happily, for about two years less then the length of the marriage.
