A vote of thanks
You may have noticed that the blog is looking purtier, or, at the least, that random mis-formatting in Firefox has disappeared.
I have a generous techie friend to thank for that, who gave up trying to explain stuff to me and just quietly came in and spent a number of hours putting it all to right. And didn't even ridicule me (much) for my fanciful use of CSS. He's much more privacy-obsessed than I, so we'll just leave him as anonymous but very much appreciated.
The "vote of thanks," incidentally, is what always comes at the end of a speaker program here. Speaker programs in India are highly formal affairs, with lots of pre- and post-talk events. I've warned our visiting lecturers that they can think of themselves as the filling in a sandwich: it's important to have a filling, but, in the end, it doesn't really matter too much what goes into it; whereas if a sandwich is missing any of the flanking material on either side, then it's really not a sandwich anymore.
I never paid much attention to the concluding "vote of thanks," until a delightful speaker, a somewhat anxious man who was completely caught off-guard by all the pomp and who delivered his speech a little worse for wear, due to the red bindi that'd been pressed onto his forehead seconds before he took to the podium (not to mention the shower of rice grains still sticking out of his curly hair), leaned over to me and nervously whispered: "These 'votes' -- do they ever fail?"
