Just catching up on reading (and trying to work on my essay): if you haven't yet seen it, this piece is worth the length. FWIW, I broadly agree with both the author's assessment and recommendations.

Post a CommentAlong with the Decline of the West (to coin a phrase), I'd also suggest the destruction of our industrial base is moving Amerika deeper in the twilight. Instead of dumping $490 billion USD in Iraq (for the purpose of CREATING an al qaida presence there, so to have something to beat down, and tripling the price of oil while we're at it), perhaps spending that money on revitalizing the American auto industry by building a viable low-priced hybred (instead of passing some lame ass (SORRY, Esquivalence's niece!) resolution inching up MPG in twenty years) might have been a good idea.
Moreover, considering that China owns enough American IOUs that she can trash our currency whenever the mood takes her--best of luck on any showdown of China v. USA over anything. But all those Republicans; They won't 'raise taxes' for anything. Especially when you can mortgage the present (the future has already been sold).
Several years ago, a business magazine published a letter to the editor, attacking YET ONE MORE article about America's burgeoning 'service sector' economy. This letter writer said that he wondered when Business Week was going to publish an article about a town with 100% unemployment--but was having wild success with their service economy, because everyone was taking in each other's laundry.
